An event at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) where legendary playwriter Mbongeni Ngema was meant to be the main speaker has been cancelled.
The event’s cancellation comes after recent allegations of gender-based violence against the seasoned the actor made by his ex-wife Xoliswa Nduneni-Ngema in her tell-all book Heart of a Strong Woman.
In the memoir Xoliswa details abuse she endured at the hands of Mbongeni.
The event, Arts and Social Justice: The Pursuit of a Non-racial, Non-sexist Democratic South Africa was meant to be held virtually on August 27.
Since the release of the book, an extract has been published in Sunday World where the current CEO of Joburg City Theatres details how she klapped Sarafina actress Leleti Khumalo after discovering she was having an affair with her then-husband.
Mbongeni has confirmed being aware that the event has been cancelled following the article.
“The university told me that they are cancelling the event because of the article published last week. I’m not concerned by the cancellation; I am actually used to these things by now where newspapers write things about me,” he told Sowetan.
