Missing Welkom Teacher Gert Adams Found Dead After Weeks-Long Search

The search for missing Welkom teacher Gert Adams has ended in tragedy after police divers recovered his body from a water pan near the Steyn 1 mining area.

Adams, 55, disappeared on 4 October 2026 under circumstances that prompted police to investigate a possible kidnapping and carjacking.

His body was recovered from the Klippan water pan on Thursday, 29 October, almost four weeks after his disappearance. His family formally identified him the following day.

Fisherman makes disturbing discovery

Welkom police received a call at approximately 11.35am after a fisherman noticed a foul smell coming from the water.

The fisherman then spotted what appeared to be a human body floating in the pan. He immediately contacted the police and directed responding officers to the location.

Police activated the Bloemfontein Diving Unit, which retrieved the submerged body and brought it to shore.

Emergency medical services personnel examined the man and declared him dead at the scene.

On Friday, 30 October, Adams’ family positively identified the recovered body as that of the missing educator.

Gert Adams disappeared on 4 October

Adams vanished late on Sunday, 4 October, at approximately 11.30pm.

Information previously released by police indicated that unknown people may have forcibly taken him. Adams managed to contact his wife by telephone shortly after the incident began.

However, the call ended abruptly before he could fully explain what was happening or where he was being taken.

His family subsequently reported him missing, and police began investigating cases of carjacking and kidnapping.

The Welkom Serious and Violent Crimes Unit took charge of the investigation as officers searched for Adams and the people suspected of being involved in his disappearance.

Abandoned vehicle deepened the mystery

Two days after Adams disappeared, police recovered his grey Hyundai ix35 in the Klippan area of Welkom.

No one was inside the vehicle when officers found it. However, Adams’ cellphone and several personal belongings remained in the car.

The discovery raised serious concerns because police still had no indication of where the teacher had been taken. Meanwhile, the people believed to have been involved could not be located.

Investigators appealed to the public for help, while Adams’ family waited anxiously for information about his whereabouts.

The case also attracted attention across the Free State as community members shared missing-person notices and calls for information.

Car keys found in teacher’s pocket

When police divers recovered Adams’ body, officers found his vehicle keys in his pocket.

The discovery has become another important detail in the investigation, particularly because his car had been recovered weeks earlier.

However, police have not explained what the keys may reveal about the final hours before his death. Investigators must still establish how Adams reached the water pan and whether anyone else was with him.

Authorities have also not disclosed whether his body showed any visible injuries.

A post-mortem examination should help determine the cause of death. It could also provide investigators with more information about when Adams died.

Police open an inquest docket

Police have registered an inquest docket to investigate the circumstances surrounding Adams’ death.

An inquest does not automatically mean that police have ruled out criminal conduct. Instead, it allows investigators to establish how, when and where a person died when the circumstances remain unclear.

Therefore, detectives may continue examining the original carjacking and kidnapping investigation alongside the new findings.

Police have not announced any arrests. They have also not confirmed whether Adams died soon after his disappearance or remained alive for some time.

Furthermore, authorities have not said whether the area where police found his body had already been searched during the earlier operation.

Family’s long wait ends in heartbreak

For nearly four weeks, Adams’ relatives lived without knowing whether he was safe or when he would return home.

The recovery of his vehicle offered investigators an important lead. Nevertheless, it did not immediately reveal where he had been taken.

His family has now received the devastating confirmation that the search has ended in his death.

The tragedy has also affected the Welkom education community, which had been hoping for the teacher’s safe return.

Attention will now turn to the police investigation and the unanswered questions surrounding his disappearance.

Police investigation continues

Investigators must determine what happened between Adams’ final telephone call on 4 October and the recovery of his body on 29 October.

They will also need to establish whether his death was connected to the suspected kidnapping and carjacking that police initially investigated.

Members of the public who may have information about Adams’ disappearance can contact Detective Sergeant Tsie Matlokotsi of the Welkom Serious and Violent Crimes Unit on 078 758 5658.

Information can also be reported through Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or anonymously through the MySAPS App.

Until investigators receive forensic results and complete the inquest, the exact circumstances surrounding Adams’ death remain undetermined.
