NMB councillors allegedly receive death threats

Police are investigating after four opposition councillors in Nelson Mandela Bay received death threats.

The councillors, from the United Front, African Independent Congress, Congress of the People and the Patriotic Alliance, were ordered to vote in favour of the city’s budget, which was tabled on Wednesday but has again not been passed.

Security was tight while tensions ran high in Council Chambers, amid attempts to pass the R12-billion budget.

Three councillors received threatening phone calls while one had four strange men arrive at her home, making threats.

Opposition parties, who are needed by the coalition government to pass legislation, have blocked the budget for a third time.

They say the budget isn’t compliant, because processes like public hearings weren’t followed.

“I am not scared because the engineer of these threats is sitting here in chambers the engineer of these threats is one of your councillors…,” said Marlon Daniels from the Patriotic Alliance.

The Council says it’s taking the allegations seriously.

“Upon receipt of any investigation findings as the speaker of council I will take that to the rules and ethics committee if any councillor is implicated,” said Nelson Mandela Bay Speaker Buyelwa Mafaya.

If the budget doesn’t pass by the 30 June, the metro runs the risk of being placed under administration.
