Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi is set to visit a Pretoria school on Monday after a pupil drowned during an excursion to Sun City.
The teenager from Soshanguve reportedly drowned, just hours after his group arrived at the resort.
The department’s spokesperson Steve Mabona told eNCA it was a very unfortunate incident.
“Some of the learners had sneaked out for a swim and unfortunately this learner could not swim. By the time he was rescued it was too late. He was declared dead on the scene.”
The Gauteng education department has extended its condolences to the family and the school.

A man who allegedly murdered his girlfriend and stuffed her body in a steel case in Mpumalanga has been arrested. The 32-year-old victim was last seen by her family in Kwamhlanga last week Sunday.
The man informed her family that she had gone to the clinic after she was reported missing. The victim’s bruised half n@ked body was discovered inside the case at her boyfriend’s house on Friday. Read more
