Johnson & Johnson vaccine booster shots to be made available to healthcare workers

Johnson & Johnson vaccine booster shots will be made available to all health workers who received a first dose as part of the Sisonke study. Almost 500,000 took part in the study between February and May this year ahead of the third wave.

The South African Medical Research Council says that a new study shows that a second booster shot of the vaccine substantially increases protection against symptomatic and severe disease, particularly in elderly patients.

As with the first study, health workers who participated in the Sisonke study will receive an invitation by SMS with further instructions.

The council says the results of this phase of the study will be used to assess the need for booster shots for the rest of the population.
