Afro-Tainment founder DJ Tira, was apparently a no show at uMvoti Merthley Lake Music Festival last Wednesday, following concerns about his safety This follows after rumours mill went to overdrive with the suggestion that disgruntled supporters of Maskandi musician’s Ntencane Zondi, would disrupt the festival and attack him if he graced the stage. Dj Tira was apparently billed on the line up entertain a flock of festival-goers who attended the concert which was held at Ntencane’s hometown in Greytown. Ntencane’s supporters who are called ‘Amabhinca’ came out guns blazing, allegedly demanding that Tira not set foot on stage otherwise his performance would end in tragedy.
According to Isolezwe they allegedly accused the renowned DJ of being a mastermind behind the SABC’s Ukhozi FM Song of The Year cancellation which saw the public broadcaster preventing airing it at the end of December. It was announced at the end of December 2019 that the highly anticipated annual Song of the Year would not be aired because of some drama that unfolded behind the scenes and that left scores of listeners bitterly disappointed.
To be fair, there was already confusion about whose idea it was to have the public vote for the song of the year. Ukhozi FM decided to terminate the services of Michael Owen Production who claimed to have came with this concept but still continued using their concept without compensating them
This company, in particular, was responsible for running the New Year’s Eve Song of the Year chart for the station. OM Production obtained an interdict against Ukhozi FM which prevented the airing of the song of the year on the station and left many in stitches. Amabhinca further accused Tira of being jealous. This is after Tira told Ntencane not to be fazed by the hype of his fame and song, but focus on being relevant in the industry, and producing good music in the future. The musician who was vying to clinch the coveted title of song of the year was convinced that Tira was jealous of his hit song.
His disgruntled fans took to the socials to express their disappointment. While DJ Tira could not be reached for a comment, his Manager Senzo Shezi said “ I am not aware of what happened at the festival, Tira is currently on Vacation, you must email him to inquire more.”
According to Isolezwe Tira was informed by event’s organizers not to make an appearance at the festival because they could not guarantee his safety Speaking to Isolezwe he said “ They informed me that they could not be certain about my safety hence, I decided pull out of the festival. This is not the first time Tira’s performance was met with mixed emotions, last year he was left with a gash in his face after drunk students at the University of Venda hit him with a beer bottle unprovoked while he was performing there.
