A journey to Malawi in search of spiritual healing ended in betrayal after a South African man woke up and discovered that his travelling companion had disappeared with his Nissan Navara.
Malawi police arrested 32-year-old Blessings Mbalangwe after recovering the South African-registered vehicle in Dowa District.
The Nissan Navara Double Cab, bearing registration number KD 14 XN GP, belongs to South African national Nkosinathi Mathebula.
Healing journey takes a shocking turn
According to Malawi’s Central West Region Police, Mathebula and Mbalangwe travelled together from South Africa to Malawi.
Their purpose was to visit a renowned prophet and seek spiritual assistance for Mathebula’s nephew, who had remained in South Africa.
However, the deeply personal journey took a dramatic turn after the two men arrived in Malawi and found accommodation in Kaphiri.
Police spokesperson Sub-Inspector Foster Benjamin said Mbalangwe took the Nissan Navara while Mathebula was sleeping.
When Mathebula woke up, he discovered that both his travelling companion and vehicle were gone. Mbalangwe had driven towards Dowa District, leaving Mathebula stranded in an unfamiliar country.
Mathebula immediately reported the stolen vehicle to the Lilongwe Anti-Motor Vehicle Theft Unit. Officers then launched an investigation and began searching for the missing bakkie.
Police trace Nissan Navara to Dowa
The investigation led detectives to Nyemba Village under Traditional Authority Msakambewa in Dowa District.
Police found the Nissan Navara hidden at Mbalangwe’s family home. However, he was not at the property when officers initially recovered the vehicle.
Dowa police detectives secured the bakkie before handing the investigation to the Lilongwe Anti-Motor Vehicle Theft Unit.
Meanwhile, the search for Mbalangwe continued. Officers later located and arrested him in Lilongwe.
His arrest brought a major breakthrough in a case that attracted attention across Malawi and South Africa because of its unusual circumstances.
Trust turns into betrayal
The story has left many social media users stunned because Mathebula reportedly trusted Mbalangwe enough to travel with him across international borders.
This was not a random vehicle theft involving strangers. Instead, the two men had travelled together on a journey motivated by concern for a family member.
Mathebula went to Malawi hoping to find spiritual help for his nephew. However, the trip ended with him stranded after his trusted companion vanished with his vehicle.
The case highlights how quickly a journey built on trust can turn into a nightmare.
Fortunately, police managed to trace and recover the Nissan Navara before it disappeared permanently or changed hands.
Blessings Mbalangwe charged
Police charged Mbalangwe with theft of a motor vehicle following his arrest.
He is expected to appear in court, where prosecutors will present the details surrounding the disappearance and recovery of the Nissan Navara.
Investigators will also establish how the vehicle reached Dowa, where it was kept and whether anyone helped conceal it.
The recovered bakkie will remain an important piece of evidence as the case moves through the legal process.
Police have not linked the incident to a larger cross-border vehicle-smuggling network. The available information treats it as an individual motor vehicle theft case involving Mbalangwe and Mathebula’s recovered Nissan Navara.

For Mathebula, the recovery of his vehicle brought some relief after a trip that went completely wrong.
