Millions of South African social grant beneficiaries must take note of three important SASSA developments before September 2026.
The confirmed payment dates are approaching, the SASSA Gold Card replacement deadline is days away, and selected beneficiaries must complete compulsory grant reviews. Missing one of these updates could result in payment delays or difficulty accessing grant money.
While SASSA has confirmed that September payments will start early in the month, beneficiaries should prepare now instead of waiting for their normal collection date.
September 2026 SASSA payment dates confirmed
SASSA will continue paying permanent social grants over three staggered days. Older persons will receive their grants first, followed by disability grant recipients and then beneficiaries of children’s grants.
The confirmed September 2026 payment dates are:
- Older Persons Grant: Wednesday, 2 September 2026
- Disability Grant: Thursday, 3 September 2026
- Children’s Grants: Friday, 4 September 2026
Beneficiaries do not have to withdraw their money on the first payment day. Once SASSA deposits the grant, the funds remain available in the beneficiary’s account.
Therefore, people who want to avoid long queues can wait before visiting an ATM, retailer or other payment point. Beneficiaries should also protect their cards and PINs while withdrawing money.
The three-day timetable applies to permanent grants. Social Relief of Distress grant recipients should check their personal status online because R370 SRD payments do not follow the same fixed three-day schedule.
SASSA Gold Card deadline arrives on 31 August
The second major update concerns beneficiaries who still use the old SASSA Gold Card.
Postbank has given beneficiaries until 31 August 2026 to replace their Gold Cards with the new Postbank Black Card. The bank is phasing out the old cards and has warned that beneficiaries who miss the deadline could face disruptions when accessing their money.
However, this does not mean SASSA will automatically cancel a beneficiary’s grant on 1 September. Instead, the person could struggle to withdraw or use the money if the old card stops working after the migration process ends.
The card replacement service is free. Beneficiaries must take a valid South African identity document or temporary ID to an approved replacement point.
Postbank Black Cards are available at selected branches of:
- Shoprite
- Checkers
- Usave
- Pick n Pay
- Boxer
- Spar
Replacement sites generally operate from Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm. However, operating hours may differ between locations.
As the deadline approaches, Postbank expects queues to become longer. Beneficiaries who still need to make the switch should act as soon as possible instead of waiting until the final day.
For assistance with card replacements, lost cards, PIN problems or declined transactions, beneficiaries can contact the Postbank call centre on 0800 5354 55.
Grant reviews could affect future payments
Meanwhile, selected beneficiaries have received notices instructing them to complete a SASSA grant review.
During the August payment cycle, grants identified for review were paid on Friday, 7 August, instead of during the normal three-day cycle. SASSA then instructed the affected beneficiaries to visit an office during August and complete the process.
Importantly, the review does not apply to every grant recipient. SASSA contacts selected beneficiaries by SMS using the cellphone number recorded on its system.
Anyone who receives a legitimate review notification should respond promptly. Failure to complete the process could lead to the grant being suspended or eventually lapsing under the Social Assistance Act.
Depending on the grant and the beneficiary’s circumstances, SASSA may request:
- A valid South African ID
- Proof of income or an affidavit confirming unemployment
- Bank statements covering the previous three months
- Proof of residence
- Marriage, divorce or death certificates where applicable
- Children’s birth certificates for child-related grants
- Any additional documents listed in the review notice
Beneficiaries should take original documents and certified copies where required. Those who are bedridden or medically unable to visit an office should contact SASSA about appointing an authorised representative.
SASSA also advises beneficiaries to update their cellphone numbers, addresses and financial information whenever their circumstances change. Incorrect contact information could prevent an important review notification from reaching the right person.
With three major developments unfolding at the same time, beneficiaries should confirm their September payment date, replace any remaining Gold Cards before 31 August and respond immediately if SASSA requests a grant review.
