South African acting powerhouse Sindi Dlathu has stepped into a chilling new role in Netflix’s latest local thriller, Umthetho.
The seven-part series began streaming on Friday, 14 August 2026, bringing viewers a tense story of family loyalty, prison corruption and the dangerous choices people make to protect those they love.
Dlathu celebrated the release with striking pictures shared on Instagram. Posing beside Netflix’s famous red branding, the actress officially handed the series over to viewers.
“The story is yours now! Umthetho is live on @netflixsa,” she wrote.
Her announcement quickly attracted tens of thousands of likes as fans celebrated her return in a completely different role.
Sindi Dlathu becomes the ruthless Agnes Khoza
In Umthetho, Dlathu plays Agnes Khoza, a corrupt prison warden who controls the facility through fear, manipulation and carefully protected criminal relationships.
Agnes operates alongside Detective Bennet Tau, played by Molefi Monaisa. Together, they create a dangerous system in which prisoners, police officers and their relatives can easily become disposable.
Dlathu’s transformation into the calculating warden gives viewers a colder side of the actress. Agnes does not need to shout to establish her authority. Instead, she watches, calculates and acts when her targets least expect it.
The character also places Dlathu at the centre of the series’ biggest conflict. Agnes is determined to protect her operation, even if that means destroying an entire family.
A prosecutor becomes trapped between family and the law
Umthetho follows Mbali Dlamini, an idealistic state prosecutor played by Nqobile Nunu Gamedze.
Mbali has built her life around justice and respect for the law. However, everything changes when she discovers that her older brother, Moses, is still alive after the family believed he had died 14 years earlier.
Moses, portrayed by Tony Kgoroge, is serving time in prison and has become the leader of a gang known as Gaz’lam. His attempt to challenge corruption inside the facility puts him directly in Agnes Khoza’s path.
When Agnes frames Moses for the death of another inmate, Mbali faces an impossible decision. She can follow the law and watch her brother suffer, or cross the line to save him.
Her decision to help Moses gives Agnes the leverage she needs. Mbali is arrested and forced to work as a double agent, placing her career, freedom and family at risk.
The danger becomes even more personal when her younger brother, Sphelele, played by Given Stuurman, is pulled into the conflict. Mbali must then navigate a world where every choice has consequences and nobody can be trusted completely.
Umthetho brings together a powerful South African cast
Alongside Dlathu, Gamedze, Kgoroge and Stuurman, the series features several familiar South African actors.
Lorcia Cooper-Khumalo portrays Crystal, Moses’ wife, while Molefi Monaisa takes on the role of Detective Bennet Tau. The cast also includes Ernest Msibi, Lungelo Madondo, Obed Baloyi, Mandla Gaduka, SK Khoza and Herald Khumalo.
Rather than relying only on prison action, Umthetho explores the emotional cost of divided loyalties. Mbali may be a prosecutor, but she is also a sister trying to keep her family alive.
