IEC says 1.7 million registered to vote

The Electoral Commission of South Africa says more than 1.7 million voters registered this weekend.

KwaZulu-Natal is leading with the highest number of registrations followed by Gauteng.

The IEC says the candidate lists for political parties will close on Tuesday at 5 pm.

On Monday, the Constitutional Court ruled the IEC’s decision to reopen the candidate lists is not unlawful, unconstitutional or invalid.

The IEC has apologized for the glitches with the Voter Portal meant to allow people to register electronically until midnight on Monday.

The body has asked voters to be patient and continue trying to register.
