PSG Set for Historic Intercontinental Cup Final in Doha

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), the newly crowned UEFA Champions League winners, are set to make history this December as they participate in their first-ever Intercontinental Cup final. FIFA announced on Sunday that the prestigious match will take place on December 17 in Doha, Qatar—marking a new chapter for the French giants on the global stage.

Their opponent for the final will be determined just four days earlier through a playoff competition known as the Challenger Cup, adding an extra layer of anticipation to the historic encounter.

PSG Eyes Global Glory in Intercontinental Cup Debut

While PSG has dominated French domestic football for the past decade and recently clinched their first Champions League title, this match will represent their debut in the Intercontinental Cup, a tournament that has undergone multiple transformations over the decades.

Their route to this final came after a commanding Champions League campaign in which PSG, under the management of Luis Enrique, finally overcame their European demons. Now, the Parisians look ahead to potentially lifting a global title to cap off what could be the most successful season in the club’s history.

PSG’s final opponent is not yet confirmed and will come through the Challenger Cup, scheduled for December 13. The playoff includes a compelling set of clubs:

The South American race features four high-profile teams:

  • Palmeiras (Brazil) vs LDU Quito (Ecuador)

  • Flamengo (Brazil) vs Racing Club (Argentina)

The Copa Libertadores final is scheduled for November 29, giving just over two weeks for the South American winners to prepare for a potential clash against Cruz Azul and a chance to then face PSG in the final.

Once a fixture in the football calendar from 1960 to 2004, the Intercontinental Cup traditionally featured a single showdown between the European and South American champions. In 2005, the format was merged into the FIFA Club World Cup, incorporating champions from all continents.

However, the Intercontinental Cup was reintroduced in a new format in 2023, designed to bridge the gap between continents through a playoff-based structure. Unlike the Club World Cup, this tournament returns to a more streamlined version but allows non-European and South American teams a path to the final through a competitive Challenger Cup.

Last year, Real Madrid defeated Pachuca of Mexico in the first edition of the relaunched format. Now, PSG hopes to follow in their Spanish rivals’ footsteps by claiming the global title.

The decision to host the final in Doha, Qatar, adds to the tournament’s international profile. Qatar, fresh off hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup, continues to establish itself as a hub for major football events.

PSG’s ties to Qatar are also noteworthy, as the club is owned by Qatar Sports Investments (QSI), adding a layer of significance and symbolism to the match being played on Qatari soil.

The Lusail Stadium—or another prominent Doha venue—is expected to host the final, and organizers anticipate a capacity crowd. Fans of PSG, particularly from the Middle East and North Africa, are expected to attend in large numbers to support the French champions.

For PSG, winning the Intercontinental Cup would not only crown them as unofficial world club champions but also solidify their growing legacy in global football. After years of near-misses in the Champions League, lifting both European and international silverware in the same season would mark a milestone moment.

Club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has long spoken about the vision of making PSG a global powerhouse—not just in Europe but across all continents. Winning the Intercontinental Cup would be a significant step toward realizing that ambition.

With less than three months to go, anticipation is building around PSG’s final opponent. Will it be Egyptian underdogs Pyramids FC, Mexican stalwarts Cruz Azul, or one of South America’s legendary clubs?

Regardless of who they face, PSG’s presence in the Intercontinental Cup final underscores their arrival on the world stage—not just as a European force, but as a truly global club.
