Arsenal delivered a powerful warning to their Premier League rivals after defeating Manchester City 3-0 to win the 2026 FA Community Shield.
Riccardo Calafiori, Kai Havertz and captain Martin Odegaard scored as the Gunners dominated Sunday’s season curtain-raiser at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.
Mikel Arteta’s side entered the match as the reigning Premier League champions. Meanwhile, Manchester City qualified after winning the FA Cup.
However, the anticipated heavyweight battle quickly became a one-sided demonstration of Arsenal’s speed, intensity and attacking quality.
Calafiori scores after only 24 seconds
Arsenal made a breathtaking start and needed just 24 seconds to open the scoring.
Myles Lewis-Skelly played a clever reverse pass into Calafiori’s path. The Italian defender then guided a composed finish beyond Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
His strike became the fastest recorded goal in Community Shield history. More importantly, it immediately disrupted Enzo Maresca’s plans for his first competitive match as City manager.
City tried to respond through Phil Foden, who forced David Raya into an excellent diving save after 20 minutes. However, Arsenal continued finding space whenever they moved forward.
The Gunners doubled their advantage in the 28th minute.
Odegaard delivered a curling cross towards summer signing Christos Tzolis. The Greek winger produced an excellent header across the penalty area, allowing Havertz to head the ball past Donnarumma.
Tzolis impressed throughout the first half with his movement and direct running. Furthermore, he gave City’s defenders constant problems whenever Arsenal regained possession.
City created two late first-half chances through Erling Haaland and Jeremy Doku. Nevertheless, Raya denied Haaland before Ben White blocked Doku’s follow-up effort.
Arsenal almost scored a third before the break. Donnarumma pushed away Havertz’s cross, but Josko Gvardiol cleared Odegaard’s resulting attempt off the line.
Odegaard completes Man City humiliation
Manchester City made a change at half-time, with Jack Grealish replacing Doku. Arsenal also introduced Declan Rice for debutant Bruno Guimaraes.
However, the substitutions did not change the direction of the match.
Odegaard added Arsenal’s third goal in the 48th minute after another impressive move involving Tzolis.
The winger delivered a low pass into the penalty area, where Odegaard moved ahead of Gvardiol. Arsenal’s captain then sent Donnarumma to the ground with a clever dummy before calmly rolling the ball into the empty net.
Arsenal supporters responded with loud celebrations as their team began playing with confidence and freedom.
Maresca replaced Haaland and Nico O’Reilly with Omar Marmoush and Marc Guehi. Later, Rayan Cherki and Rico Lewis entered as City searched for a way back into the contest.
Still, Arsenal remained organised and dangerous on the counterattack.
Arteta introduced Bukayo Saka and Piero Hincapie after 60 minutes. Viktor Gyokeres, Martin Zubimendi and Eberechi Eze also received playing time as Arsenal demonstrated their impressive squad depth.
City enjoyed more possession during the closing stages. Yet they struggled to break through Arsenal’s defensive structure.
Raya protected his clean sheet with another sharp save when Antoine Semenyo fired towards the bottom corner. Cherki also tested the Spanish goalkeeper from distance, but Arsenal comfortably managed the remaining minutes.
Arsenal send Premier League warning
The convincing result secured Arsenal’s 18th Community Shield and their first trophy of the 2026/27 campaign.
It also gave Arteta’s players an early psychological advantage over a Manchester City side expected to challenge them for the Premier League title.
Arsenal combined aggressive pressing with fast, accurate passing. Additionally, their new arrivals quickly settled into the manager’s system.
Tzolis provided two assists, while Guimaraes delivered an assured midfield performance before making way for Rice. Meanwhile, Lewis-Skelly continued to show why he has become one of Arsenal’s most exciting young players.
Manchester City endured a difficult afternoon under their new manager.
New signing Elliot Anderson struggled to control Arsenal’s midfield movement. Donnarumma also experienced a challenging competitive debut behind a defence that Arsenal repeatedly opened with quick passing.
Haaland had opportunities, but Arsenal’s defenders largely kept the Norwegian striker quiet. He left the field early in the second half without scoring.
The Community Shield does not guarantee success during the season. Nevertheless, Arsenal’s commanding display showed that their hunger remains intact after winning the league.
City, on the other hand, must improve quickly as Maresca attempts to reshape the team following Pep Guardiola’s departure.
Arsenal will begin their Premier League title defence against Coventry City. Manchester City, meanwhile, will open their campaign at home against Bournemouth.
Based on this performance, the champions already look ready for another serious title challenge.
