Popular radio host Penny Ntuli leaves Gagasi FM over R2 800 salary

Well-known South African media personality Penny Ntuli has decided to quit her job at Gagasi FM because of the salary on offer while many radio presenters are renewing their contracts ahead of the new season starting in April.

The social media sensation, who joined the KwaZulu-Natal-based radio station in 2022, wrote a lengthy letter on her social media accounts. In it she addressed a number of rumours about her and expressed her heartbreak following her decision to leave.

Ntuli shared a copy of her resignation letter to the station, as well as her new contract offer. The new contract offer reveals that Gagasi FM had given her the graveyard show on Sundays between 1:00 and 4:00. On offer was an amount of R711, 98 per show.

“It’s been an amazing two years there. I am grateful to be considered as one of the talents that have been given an opportunity to showcase their talents once again in the new season on your platform.

“However, the salary of R2 800 per month on my offer letter or contract is not something I can sustain my life with.”

“Allow me to go out there ngiyongqongqoza kweminye iiminyango ngyobheka amanye amathuba omsebendzi azokwazi ukungiph amandla okukwazi ukunakekela izingane zasekhaya ezingibhekile (to knock and look for better opportunities that will help feed my family) hence I ask that my contract NOT be renewed.

“I do however trust that you’ll bring in the best talent on air as per usual,” Ntuli wrote in her resignation.

Ntuli also wrote on her Instagram and Facebook account that she had “gladly accepted the new show” until she was told she would be getting paid R2 800 per month. According to the radio host, her new salary would have not been too far from what she was getting paid for the past two years.

“I felt embarrassed, but I calmed down and went back to management to ask them to review my salary. With that money, I won’t be able to do anything,” she said.

“During negotiations, my manager suggested I consider other options than being on air, this also killed my confidence.

“I decided to ask them not to renew my contract this year. I didn’t dump them because I have another offer, I didn’t dump them because I don’t like to work, those who know me, know how I love radio presenting and how much I love Gagasi FM. It’s true that I’m not coming back this year and I thank them for the opportunity,” she said.
