Parents and teachers from the La Rochelle Primary School in the south of Johannesburg are staging a sit-in on Monday morning, demanding new mobile classes. The School Governing Body (SGB) and parents say they’ve been left with no choice but to resort to this desperate measure. SGB president Doreen Amazu said 60 children are at home because there is no space to accommodate in the current facilities.
Amazu said some of the parents are demanding that children born to South African parents are accommodated before children whose parents are from other countries. She stated the Department of Basic Education promised the school five mobile classrooms four years ago, but have only given them two classrooms to date.
