Ipswich Town produced a sensational late comeback to defeat Fulham 2-1 at Portman Road, scoring twice in the closing minutes to snatch all three Premier League points.
Fulham appeared to be heading towards their first league victory of the season after Ryan Sessegnon opened the scoring in the 55th minute. However, Abdoul Ouattara equalised in the 89th minute before Dara O’Shea completed the turnaround with a stoppage-time header.
The extraordinary finish sent Portman Road into celebration and left Fulham wondering how a seemingly controlled performance had ended in defeat.
Fulham Control the Early Stages
Fulham started the match with greater purpose and controlled much of the possession during the opening half.
Calvin Bassey helped the visitors build from the back, while Alex Iwobi and Josh King provided movement through midfield. Fulham repeatedly reached promising positions but struggled to turn their pressure into clear goalscoring opportunities.
Ipswich found it difficult to establish a consistent rhythm. Gary O’Neil’s team remained organised defensively, though, and ensured the match was still goalless at half-time.
That resilience eventually proved crucial. Although Fulham looked more comfortable for long periods, they failed to build the commanding lead their possession arguably deserved.
Ryan Sessegnon Gives Fulham the Lead
Fulham finally made the breakthrough ten minutes after the restart.
Sessegnon collected the ball outside the penalty area and produced an excellent long-range strike to beat the Ipswich goalkeeper. It was a moment of individual quality and appeared to place Álvaro Arbeloa’s side on course for a valuable victory.
The goal should have given Fulham the confidence to take control of the closing stages. Instead, their failure to score a second kept Ipswich alive.
Fulham continued to create openings but were wasteful when opportunities arrived. As the match entered its final period, the visitors gradually dropped deeper and invited Ipswich to increase the pressure.
Ipswich Refuse to Surrender
Ipswich’s performance was not always polished, but their determination never disappeared.
O’Neil’s players pushed more bodies forward as Fulham began protecting their narrow advantage. The match became increasingly frantic, with Ipswich sending crosses and loose balls into a crowded penalty area.
That pressure finally produced an equaliser in the 89th minute.
Ouattara found space and delivered a superb finish to level the score. The goal transformed the atmosphere inside Portman Road and completely changed the momentum of the contest.
Fulham, who had spent most of the afternoon looking like the stronger team, suddenly appeared vulnerable. Ipswich sensed the opportunity and immediately went searching for a winner.
Dara O’Shea Completes the Comeback
The decisive moment arrived two minutes into stoppage time.
Dara O’Shea rose inside the Fulham penalty area and directed a powerful header into the net, completing an astonishing turnaround for the home side.
The defender’s winner sparked wild celebrations among the Ipswich supporters. In the space of only a few minutes, their team had moved from the brink of defeat to one of its most memorable victories since returning to the Premier League.
Fulham barely had enough time to respond. The visitors had controlled most of the match, but their inability to finish chances and manage the closing stages ultimately proved costly.
Fulham’s Search for a Victory Continues
The defeat increases the pressure on Arbeloa and his Fulham players.
They entered the match without a league victory and appeared moments away from ending that run. Instead, two late defensive lapses left them with another painful result.
Fulham remain on two points after six matches and inside the relegation places. More concerning than the league position may be the manner of the defeat. The Cottagers demonstrated that they can compete and create opportunities, but once again failed to turn a promising performance into three points.
Their next match against Hull City will now carry even greater importance.
Ipswich Strengthen Their Impressive Start
Ipswich, meanwhile, move to nine points following their third victory of the season.
The newly promoted side had already beaten Sunderland and Crystal Palace before facing Fulham. This latest result provides further evidence that O’Neil’s team will not be easily intimidated in the Premier League.
Their performance also highlighted the value of persistence. Ipswich were second-best for significant periods, but remained within one goal before capitalising when Fulham lost control.
A difficult trip to Manchester City awaits them next. However, after such a dramatic victory, Ipswich will travel with growing belief that they can compete against the country’s leading clubs.
Fulham may feel they allowed the match to escape. Ipswich, however, earned their reward by refusing to accept defeat.
