No COVID-19 vaccine yet: Health minister Zweli Mkhize

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has reiterated that there is still no vaccine for COVID-19. There are currently 150 reported cases of coronavirus in the country and Mkhize says the number of infected South Africans is likely to reach 200 on Friday.

However, the minister has reassured citizens that not everybody who catches it will fall ill. A vaccine could be developed in the next 18 months. We are in the process now of forming a ministerial advisory committee on the issue of the outbreak which will coordinate a lot of effort,” Mkhize said. On the one side, we need to see a clinician society which will be discussing the various approaches and looking at the various lessons from all over the world on how to deal with the virus.

“There is lots of speculation out there, people have spoken about anti-viral treatment but we are aware that there is a whole of trials that are going on including the issues of the vaccine. At the moment there is no vaccine available. Coronavirus Hotline Number: 0800 029 999 from 8am to 4pm, Monday to Friday
