AWARD-WINNING radio presenter Nicole Da Silva has parted ways with popular radio station, 5FM.
Nicole, who has been part of the station for almost a decade, shared that her decision to leave was an easy one.
“This is because I’ve had a lot of time to reflect on my journey at the station and process everything, especially over the last couple of years. I decided to leave because I didn’t feel like there were any opportunities for growth at the station for me and I wasn’t part of the strategy,” she told a local publication.
Reflecting on her journey, Nicole who hosts the weekend drive-time show The Weekend Play Date said it’s been amazing.
“There were loads of early mornings and late nights, but that’s how you hone your craft and figure out what kind of content fits best and you can grow your confidence without feeling the pressure that comes with daytime.”
Nicole said she was going to miss being part of the station, especially the people.
After sharing the news of her leaving, a lot of people were sad. But without sharing much, Nicole told the People’s Paper her fans shouldn’t worry too much because she was in talks with other stations and might be back very soon.
The presenter, whose love for the media runs deep and one day hopes to put together a course for aspiring presenters, also shared tips for youngsters who hope to find themselves in the radio space with a long-lasting career.
“The first thing one needs to do is to figure out who they are and the kind of content that aligns with that. A lot of young presenters start and sound like their favourite radio presenters instead of themselves,” she said.
“Also remember that everyone starts somewhere. Campus radio, community radio, online radio, podcasts, public broadcasting radio, commercial radio and talk radio are all options and most presenters you listen to started at campus radio as volunteers where they learnt hands-on.”
