Parliamentary complex severely damaged by fire, says MayCo member JP Smith

As the battle against the blaze continues in the National Assembly its feared that the fire might delay the opening of Parliament.

Firefighters are currently on the scene battling the blaze in Cape Town.

The fire has spread to the National Assembly.

The City of Cape Town’s JP Smith said there is extensive damage to the Old Assembly building.

“The entire Parliamentary complex is severely damaged, waterlogged and smoke damaged,” Smith said.

“The roof above the Old Assembly chamber is completely gone.

“The offices adjacent to it and the gym are destroyed.”
