The City of Cape Town has confirmed a building in the Parliamentary precinct has caught fire.
City of Cape Town Member for Safety and Security JP Smith said the roof in the old building has completely collapsed and that there are some cracks in the walls.
He said about 60 firefighters are currently battling the blaze.
“The fire is not under control,” he said.
“The fire department is calling for additional resources to assist.”
Smith said the fire seems to have started in an office complex and gradually spread to the gymnasium.
“Unfortunately it has now affected the Assembly chambers as well.”
Masibulele Xaso, secretary to the National Assembly, said the presiding officers are concerned about a security breach.
“It’s a sad thing that is happening, indeed. But we are very concerned about the situation.”
