West Ham sack Manuel Pellegrini after Leicester defeat

West Ham United have sacked manager Manuel Pellegrini after the club fell to a 2-1 Premier League defeat at home to Leicester City.

Chairman David Sullivan told the club website: ‘It is with great disappointment that we’ve had to make the decision. Manuel is a gentleman and it has been a real pleasure to work with someone of his calibre.

‘However, it has become clear that a change is required to get the club back on track in line with our ambitions this season.

‘We felt it was necessary to act now in order to give the new manager as much time as possible to try and achieve that goal.’

In an interview after the Leicester defeat, Pellegrini admitted: ‘I understand about the fans, these are not the performances they expect.’

Pellegrini’s men had won just one of their last five top-flight matches, and the latest results leave the Hammers languishing in 17th, one place and one point above the relegation zone.

In total, the Hammers won 23 of 64 matches with the Chilean at the helm, giving the 66-year-old a win percentage of 35.9 per cent.

And now David Moyes is expected to return to the London Stadium on an 18-month contract.

The Scot reigned at the London Stadium between November 2017 and May 2018, securing the club’s Premier League status.

It is understood Moyes will meet with club owners on Sunday to finalise the deal.
