Ipswich Town marked their return to the Premier League with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Sunderland, secured by a 90th-minute winner from former Black Cats winger Jack Clarke.

As the match entered its final stages, the contest appeared to be drifting towards a draw. That was until Clarke stepped off the bench. With the game seemingly heading towards a 1-1 draw, Clarke punished another Sunderland mistake in the 90th minute.
Omar Alderete’s giveaway presented Ipswich with an opportunity, and Clarke showed the composure and quality that made him such a dangerous attacker during his time on Wearside. The winger finished clinically to send the Ipswich supporters into celebration and complete a remarkable Premier League return.
Clarke’s goal carried an added sense of drama because of his history with Sunderland. The winger joined Ipswich in 2024 in a deal worth £15 million after establishing himself as an important player for the north-east club.
His late strike ensured that his first Premier League appearance for Ipswich ended with three valuable points.

For O’Neil, the victory provided an encouraging start to his tenure and demonstrated the potential of Ipswich’s revamped squad. Seven new signings started the match, while players such as Enciso and Clarke showed that Ipswich have plenty of attacking options capable of making a difference.
The victory also underlined the fine margins of Premier League football. Sunderland twice conceded goals following individual errors, while Ipswich remained patient enough to take advantage when the opportunities arrived.
