The City of Tshwane is telling Hammanskraal residents not to use water from their taps. Acting mayor Abel Tau said the water is safe for adults, but not for children. “We cannot encourage the people of Hammanskraal to consume the water yet,” he said.
The city is providing alternative water sources for the time being.
“There was a conscious decision to say until such time that we’ve done adequate work upstream where the problems are… we should not pronounce that the water is safe for human consumption,” said Tau.
Tau said lobby group AfriForum conducted independent tests which found that the water was safe for human consumption.
“We want to be responsible about it,” said Tau.
“There’s a lot of work that needs to happen.”
The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) warned Hammanskraal residents in August that the water in the area is unfit for consumption.
It said some of the water determinants can cause chronic health conditions.
