Government’s slow pace in Gupta extradition slammed

Justice Minister Ronald Lamola is promising to bring the Gupta brothers back to face trial but experts doubt his sincerity.

Legal expert Mpumelelo Zikalala says there is no political will.

He says if the government’s slow pace continues, it will be a waste of taxpayers’ money.

“When it comes to the slow pace our government and law enforcement has moved in securing their attendance, I would say there is no political will.

“They can’t even explain why did it take so much time to extradite the Gupta brothers or to even lay charges against them,” he said.

“The treaty that we have now with the UAE was only signed in 2021. When it comes to securing the extradition of the Guptas we need to concentrate on the merits of the matter they are being accused.

“When authorities of the UAE ask questions we need to be supply tangible evidence, expert support, and technical support, and a conviction tax payers if we don’t have all these the extradition won’t be a success, and tax money will go to waste.”
