Gugu Zuma-Ncube speaks about her new show #Ifalakhe

The brand new show, which is set in early South Africa, aired on Sunday night and was created by Gugu Zuma-Ncube and her sister, Thuli Zuma. Gugu Zuma-Ncube is widely hailed as one of the most influential content creators in television, having put her stamp on Uzalo and the two have combined their experience to deliver a show which had South African fans buzzing early this week.

The period drama, produced by Stained Glass Productions, grabbed the attention of viewers from the moment it aired on Mzansi Magic. Many reflected that this show was the African version of other popular historic dramas that fans on the continent have been waiting for.

Ifalakhe

The show tells the story of the Okuhle tribe who wage war on the neighbouring Khanya clan after the latter is accused of stealing livestock from their kingdom.
Executive producer, actress and story supervisor Gugu Zuma-Ncube said Ifalakhe was long overdue.

Some people call Shaka Zulu a pre-colonial drama, but the period of Shaka Zulu colonisation had already happened. The story itself was by white people talking about Shaka through their lens. This is the first truly pre-colonial drama on our screens and it’s done with black people, especially black women, driving the process.”

She added that it took a lot of fighting to become both a producer and creator in a primetime slot.
