Foods and drinks that can help in quitting smoking

If you are a chain-smoker who is trying to quit smoking, you might know the struggle behind leaving the habit. The nicotine addiction gets the best of us and even if we try to quit smoking, the urge to take a puff often brings us back to square one.

While chewing gums and nicotine patches can help you quit smoking, there are some foods and drinks that can further suppress your addiction.

Take a look.

1. Milk
In a study published in the journal Nicotine & Tobacco Research, research was done on a group of 209 smokers about foods that interact with the taste of cigarettes and makes smoking palatable. Dairy products topped the list. So the next time you crave a cigarette, quickly grab a glass of milk or another dairy product of your choice.

2. Cinnamon sticks
Cinnamon sticks help in suppressing the urge of smoking by delivering a strong taste and spicy aroma, which intoxicates two of your most important senses- smell and taste. Not just that, people also recommend chewing on gums flavoured with cinnamon to efficiently stray away from smoking.

3. Popcorn
It is suggested to grab a filling snack whenever you feel the urge to smoke. One often craves a cigarette more on an empty stomach. Popcorn helps in suppressing this urge and is a low-calorie snack, which means it is extremely filling and won’t even cause weight gain.

4. Kiwi
Smoking often causes a Vitamin C deficiency in the body which can further take a hit on the immunity. Kiwi not only stocks up on Vitamin C levels but also helps in eliminating nicotine from the body. You can eat kiwi as a snack or even drink kiwi smoothie to keep your body well hydrated.

5. Ginseng tea
Ginseng Tea is one of the most effective anti-smoking drinks that can be helpful in your cigarette-quitting journey. Your brain releases dopamine (a neurotransmitter in the brain that is associated with pleasure) whenever you smoke, which further gives a feeling of pleasure and satisfaction. Ginseng helps in reducing nicotine addiction by weakening the effect of dopamine.

6. Ginger tea
The presence of sulphur compounds in ginger helps in suppressing the urge to smoke. Ginger Tea provides a relaxing effect and fights your body’s nicotine addiction.

Ginger Tea can also help in dealing with the withdrawal symptoms associated with smoking like dizziness and nausea. You can make Ginger Tea by boiling a crushed 1-inch ginger piece in 1 cup of water for about 3-4 minutes. Add 1 tsp of honey for flavour or you can even add jaggery or stevia.
