The City of Joburg will convene a special council meeting to elect a new mayor on Friday after the passing of Jolidee Matongo, who died in a car crash two weeks ago.
Matongo, who took over after the death of his predecessor Geoff Makhubo, served for just over a month.
The governing party is confident that its candidate Mpho Moerane will be elected.
Moerane is a former MMC for environment and infrastructure services in the city and ANC Johannesburg regional treasurer.
