Brazil Secures 2026 World Cup Spot with Win Over Paraguay

Brazil, the five-time world champions, have officially qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, the United States, and Mexico after a narrow 1-0 victory over Paraguay in São Paulo. The match marked the first win under new head coach Carlo Ancelotti, who celebrated his 66th birthday with the milestone victory.

The decisive goal came just before halftime, courtesy of Vinicius Jr., who capitalized on a well-placed cross from Matheus Cunha. The Real Madrid star tapped the ball in from close range in the 44th minute, sending the Corinthians Arena into celebration.

Brazil had entered the match knowing that a win would be enough to secure their spot at the World Cup, especially after Uruguay’s 2-0 win over Venezuela earlier in the day. Paraguay, meanwhile, needed just a point to qualify but failed to meet the mark.

Although the match was not Brazil’s most convincing performance, it was enough to secure third place in the South American standings with 25 points from 16 games—ensuring an automatic berth for the 2026 tournament.

Ancelotti’s First Victory at the Helm of Brazil

For Carlo Ancelotti, the win marked a significant moment. After a goalless draw against Ecuador in his first match in charge, the legendary Italian coach was eager to make his mark with Brazil. He praised the squad’s “commitment” and “attitude” after the match.

“It was a good match with a very good first half, although obviously we suffered a bit because Paraguay are very solid opponents,” Ancelotti said. “We slowed down a bit in the second, but I really liked the atmosphere and the group’s mentality.”

Ancelotti also hinted at the depth and potential of the Brazil squad, revealing that he has a list of 70 players under consideration for next summer’s tournament—including Neymar, who was sidelined due to injury.

Brazil struggled to create clear-cut chances throughout much of the first half, with Cunha missing a golden opportunity in the 35th minute by heading wide from close range. However, he redeemed himself just minutes later by setting up Vinicius Jr. for the match-winning goal.

The combination between Cunha and Vinicius Jr. was a bright spot for Brazil, showcasing the attacking depth the Seleção can rely on. Raphinha also played a crucial role in the build-up, helping to unlock Paraguay’s resolute defense.

With this win, Brazil became one of the first South American teams to punch their ticket to the 2026 World Cup. The top six teams in the CONMEBOL standings qualify automatically, while the seventh-placed team heads to an intercontinental playoff.

Brazil now joins Argentina, the reigning world champions, and Ecuador, who secured qualification after a 0-0 draw with Peru in Lima. Argentina, already through, drew 1-1 with Colombia after Thiago Almada equalized late in the game.

Uruguay also took a big step toward qualification with a 2-0 win over Venezuela. Goals from Rodrigo Aguirre and Giorgian de Arrascaeta ensured Marcelo Bielsa’s team remains on course for the World Cup.

While Brazil celebrated, Paraguay will have to wait a bit longer to confirm their World Cup return. With 24 points, they are on the cusp of qualifying for their first World Cup since 2010 but need at least one more point in their final two games.

Chile, on the other hand, saw their hopes of qualification dashed following a 2-0 loss to Bolivia. It marks the third consecutive time that Chile has failed to qualify for the World Cup, a steep fall for a team that won back-to-back Copa America titles in 2015 and 2016.

With qualification secured, Brazil can now focus on preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Ancelotti’s task will be to refine the squad, balance emerging young talents with experienced veterans, and navigate the challenges of international tournament football.

Vinicius Jr.’s growing influence, combined with a pool of players that includes Raphinha, Cunha, and a potentially fit Neymar, gives Brazil fans reason for optimism. The journey to North America has officially begun, and Brazil’s legacy as a football powerhouse remains as strong as ever.
