If you have questions about Boity Thulo’s love life, they may be answered in her new reality show, which hits small screens this week. Or not. In the series Boity: Own Your Throne, the TV presenter-turned-rapper fuels rumours about her relationship with TV presenter Maps Maponyane. Thulo, 29, and rapper Cassper Nyovest were a couple back in 2015. After a short hiatus she was rumoured to be dating Nigeria-born, SA-based music video director Stanley Obiamalu in 2018, but that didn’t last.

Last year she said she’s “happily single” and rubbished speculation that she was dating Maponyane. Asked last week if she was still single, she hesitated before saying: “No, yes, maybe. We’ll see if it even lasts or not. If it does then good, if it doesn’t then so be it. But you’ll see in the show.

Among those on the show with Thulo are her mother, Modiehi Thulo, and “best friend forever” Bob Sithole, also known as Bobby Blanco. Generously laced with expletives, the show will give fans a glimpse of her life at home with her mother and portray her making music, pursuing deals and developing her spirituality.

“The reality show was to give my followers, my fans and supporters an honest, authentic context of who I am. I think I am as honest and as real as I can be on the show,” she said. With 10 years in the entertainment industry behind her, Thulo said she felt she was finally comfortable with who she was and with letting people see that.

Nothing was off limits, she said, but there are aspects of her spiritual journey that she won’t be sharing on camera. Thulo caught flak in 2016 when she first revealed that she was undergoing sangoma training. When people dig at your character, your core, that was the lowest moment in my career, the very harsh response I got concerning my spiritual journey at the very beginning. Now people have adapted, they’re used to it, it’s a new world now.

While she may be coy about her love life, she is candid about her weight. It’s standard protocol for pictures of her derrière to get people talking. But while some have hailed her body goals, she has also been body shamed. There are moments in the show when Thulo complains about her weight.

“Now, I know I’ve gained weight and it’s not because people are saying it,” she said. I can see it and I know that I’m at fault. It’s so tough, it’s real. I’m not comfortable, I’m trying to work out, I’ve been having green juice because I’m really trying to get back to the weight that I enjoyed.

“I’m very open about the fact that I’ve gained weight. It’s not like I’m devastatingly embarrassed … It is what it is, it happened, so whatever.” She hasn’t only been working in the gym but also in studio, and has recorded a few tracks that she will release later this year.

She’s hoping the new songs will be as successful as her first single Wuz Dat, released in 2018, which made her the first female rapper in SA to achieve platinum status. Boity: Own Your Throne’ premieres at 9.30pm on Wednesday on BET channel 129.
