Avengers Infinity War breaks box office record

As such they helped Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War top of the box office and make its way into the record books alongside its counterparts.

According to Disney Africa, audiences across the continent made their way to cinemas in their numbers this past weekend (April 27-29) to witness the unprecedented cinematic journey ten years in the making.

Avengers Infinity

Infinity War took in nearly R24.6 million at the South African Box Office, with over 287k attendances for its opening weekend, including Thursday night previews.

This debut ranks as the biggest industry opening weekend ever in South African Box Office history. Friday 27 April also saw Avengers: Infinity War takes in over R8.4 million, the biggest industry opening day ever at the local box office. Also in cinemas, Marvel Studios’ Black Panther continued its historic run at the South African Box Office with the film passing an unprecedented R105 million with nearly 1.4m attendances.

Which serves as proof that the audience is there and they have the funds, they are just not willing to spend it on local films for some reason.

Recent releases – Five Fingers for Marseilles and Catching Feelings – have suffered the fate of losing screens due to low ticket sales. Of course, the audience isn’t solely to blame but an intervention in SA film clearly needs to happen – especially on the marketing front.

Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War is currently in cinemas. As are Black Panther, Five Fingers for Marseilles and Catching Feelings.
