Anele Mdoda jumped to the defence of Miss South Africa after a critic threw shade at the fact that the winner of this year’s pageant only gets to keep her prizes for the next year
A week ago, Zozibini Tunzi from the Eastern Cape was crowned as this year’s Miss South Africa, winning more than R5 million worth of prizes in the process.
Those prizes are enough to make anybody a little jealous; they include a luxury apartment in Sandton, a R1 million Mercedes Benz and dozens upon dozens of goodies and vouchers that will come in handy during her upcoming year-long reign.
However, once the year is complete, some of those prizes will be making their way back to the Miss South Africa organisation and upon realising this, some fans have flagged the “rental” policy on social media; questioning the long term impact of the prizes.
One particularly irate user wrote on Twitter, “If you emerge from a shack and win Miss SA, you will be loaned a house and car; and after your reign, you return the property and go back to your shack. The prizes are just one big scam. The comment struck a chord with a number of users who were quick to point out that, while some of the prizes have to be returned, the value of a one-year reign as Miss SA cannot be quantified by the gifts alone
One person who was quick to make this point is Anele Mdoda who gave fans a window into what a potential Miss South Africa winner stands to gain.
Other users agreed that the benefits go beyond the prizes (even those which she will only use during her reign):
Or she will win Miss Universe and be given an apartment in New York and work there and around the world for a year, growing her brand and making contacts to further her plans. 😊 or even be head of Standard Bank wealth like Peggy Sue…😜 https://t.co/e9hcM3wxP9

It’s worth pointing out that a lot of people agreed with the initial sentiment, including transport minister Fikile Mbalula who believes that she should be able to keep the car forever.
I agree with sentletse this arrangement is unfair explotative , When i was in sport i ensured that you win a car it become your property forever.
