2 women saved from mudslide in Durban

Rescue officials saved two pregnant women trapped by a mudslide in La Mercy in Durban on Wednesday morning.

The homeowner and husband of one of the women rescued from the house, Mathew Cooper detailed what happened, and says this is a constant problem in the area.

“I was at work, this (Wednesday) morning, and I got a call from my wife. My wife is about two months pregnant now. She said, “we don’t know what to do, the walls are collapsing, the house is flooded.” There is water coming down the driveway like a river, the car is stuck and they can’t get out of the premises, they were stuck inside the house…”

“This is actually the fourth time this happened. One month ago, this exact situation happened, where the stormwater was too much for the pipes on the top. There was a house on the top where half of the house collapsed because the stormwater piping gave way.”

Cooper said they have received no help from insurance companies or the municipality.
