The man accused of setting his girlfriend on fire and killing her could walk free due to a lack of evidence directly implicating him.
Viwe Dalingozi was set alight in her flat in downtown Johannesburg in October last year, allegedly by her boyfriend.
Mpho Thobane is facing one count of murder in the Johannesburg magistrate’s court.
They were together for only two months. It’s alleged Thobane, in a fit of jealous rage, set Dalingozi alight while she was asleep.
Dalingozi managed to escape and call for help but later succumbed to extensive burns.
A year later, Thobane is in the dock but it’s been almost impossible to prove he was anywhere near the scene of the crime.
A charge of arson had to be dropped because the police never established a connection between Thobane and the fire.
The State now wants to call witnesses who spoke to Dalingozi before she died.
Welcome Madela, a state prosecutor, said, “she met up with her employer…they met in hospital and she told her I am in this condition my boyfriend has burnt me.”
The trial continues next week.
#MphoThobane The family of #ViweDalingozi has expressed their disappointment and anger in the manner the case has proceeded due to what they call the poor conduct of the police in gathering evidence- which could see Thobane walk free. @eNCA pic.twitter.com/ZwTLDjmtKM
