WHO endorses traditional African medicine trials for COVID-19

The World Health Organisation has endorsed the trial testing of traditional African medicines as potential treatments for COVID-19 and other contemporary diseases. The phase three clinical trial will assess the safety and efficacy of new products.

The president of Madagascar brought traditional medicine under the spotlight after a bid to promote a drink he claimed cured COVID-19.

Dr Ossy Kasilo, the WHO coordinator for Essential Medicines, Health Technology and Innovation in Africa, said the countries who have agreed to participate in the study will work with WHO investigators.

The investigators will need to assess the safety, efficacy and quality of the medicines.
