Western Cape Premier Alan Winde is adamant the province should be moved to Level 3 lockdown despite a surge in COVID-19 cases.
He even said that some parts should be on Level 1 already.
The province has recorded nearly 16,000 of the country’s over 24,000 infections.
It also has the highest number of COVID-19 related deaths.
“We are going according to the resident’s announcement, we are going to Level 3,” Winde said.
“In fact, some parts should be on Level 1 already. We’ve got a plan and the plan seems to be working.”
Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said the high number of infections in the Western Cape can not be attributed to the testing rate in the province.
The Western Cape has conducted 47 percent of the tests nationally and 33 percent of tests have been done in Gauteng.
“We still definitely test more than any other province, per 100,000, we still are by far the top tester in South Africa so definitely it must be,” the premier said.
Winde said there must be a return to a “new normal” that includes a return to economic activity while managing the spread of the virus.
He stated supporting the medical frontline is extremely important during the pandemic.

The purpose of creating “hotspots” is to be able to take all the measures that are necessary to control the rise of infections. Every sub district in each metro in the Western Cape that has been identified will have wall to wall surveillance by experts.
