Police on high alert in Western Cape after protests

An uneasy calm has been restored to parts of the Western Cape on Friday.

Law enforcement authorities remain on high alert after days of violent protests over service delivery, affordable housing, and land allocation.

Several people have been arrested for public violence.

In Cape Town, there’s a heavy police presence after protesters blocked roads in Somerset West, Khayelitsha, Blackheath and Mfuleni.

Mayoral Committee member for Safety and Security JP Smith said they have learnt from community meetings that political players are creating instability.

He said these individuals are instigating and encouraging land invasions and protests.
