Wentworth residents tired of waiting for housing

Patience is wearing thin for residents living in tiny flats in Wentworth, Durban.

In some cases, three generations of one family are living in a single room.

Back in March, the KZN Human Settlements Department deemed the flats uninhabitable and promised new units.

But residents are still waiting and some have turned to protests.

They are unhappy with how the housing plan is unfolding and claim the department has reneged on its commitments.

“Every time we call them they keep telling us stories,” said Celeste King, housing activist.

“Sometimes she (Nontuthuko Chiluvane) doesn’t pick up her phone. She’s got no truth, she is not honest to us so that’s also what’s rising now and making us angry.”

Chiluvane is the Human Settlements official responsible for property management and social housing.

She insists the community has been kept in the loop throughout the process.
