Uyinene Mrwetyana’s parents are not coping #RIPUyinene

UNIVERSITY of Cape Town and Stellenbosch University students held vigils today and this evening following news of the murder of UCT student Uyinene Mrwetyana. #RIPUyinene has been a top trend the whole day as celebrities and government all react to the horrific details of the 19 year-old’s death.

The 42-year-old arrested in connection with Uyinene’s disappearance has been charged with her murder and r@pe as well as defeating the ends of justice. He made his first appearance in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

He is an employee at the Clareinch Post Office, where Mrwetyana was last seen alive planning to fetch a parcel. News24 reports that according to the State, on the day of her disappearance, Mrwetyana had gone to enquire about a parcel, but the electricity at the post office had been off. She was told to return later.

When she did, she was allegedly s-e-xually accosted. She fought back but her attacker knocked her out, using a scale.

According to the State, the man confessed to the crime. Devastated students gathered the universities in their numbers singing emotionally loaded songs following vigils held over the past weekend.
