An autopsy is being conducted on a body that was discovered in Claremont, in Cape Town, on Sunday. It is believed to be the body of a University of Cape Town student, Uyinene Mrwetyana, who went missing for over a week. She was last seen at the local post office.
The police are yet to confirm whether the body is that of Mrwetyana. A 42-year-old suspect, believed to be involved in the disappearance of Mrwetyana, has been arrested. He is charged with murder, r@pe as well as defeating the ends of justice after he appeared at the Wynberg Magistrates Court on Monday.
“The court has charged him now with murder, rape and defeating the ends of justice. It is now a matter for the courts, not for us. One suspect appeared before the court. Our ultimate goal is to secure a conviction. We seize from talking. We leave that to the prosecuting authorities.”
She says it is up to the courts to decide whether the suspect was responsible for the kidnapping and possible murder of the missing women.
