Two dead, four injured in head-on collision near Polokwane

One of the injured people was trapped in the second bakkie and had to be freed from the wreckage with specialised tools.
Emergency rescue workers had to use specialised tools to free an injured man from the wreckage of a bakkie that was involved in a collision that claimed the lives of two people on the N1 near Polokwane, ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said in a statement today.

Four other people were injured in the accident and treated at the scene. Meiring said that the bakkie collided head-on with another bakkie and a trailer on the N1 Highway, about 23km from Polokwane.

Meiring said emergency services arrived at the scene at about 5am to find debris of the two wrecked bakkies spread along the side of the road.

Two dead

“Paramedics found one man lying outside the one bakkie while a second man was found lying trapped inside. Both men were assessed and found to have sustained numerous injuries and showed no signs of life. Nothing could be done for the two men and they were declared dead,” he said.

He said one of the injured people was trapped in the second bakkie and had to be freed from the wreckage with specialised tools. The four injured people were treated at the scene and then taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

“Local authorities were on the scene for further investigations,” he said.
