SA COVID-19 death toll surpasses 13 000

The health department recorded 2,728 new cases of COVID-19 in the country on Sunday. The cumulative total of confirmed cases in South Africa now stands at 609,773.

The department reported a further 72 COVID-19 related deaths, bringing the number of deaths to 13,059.

The number of recoveries is listed at 506,470 which translates to a recovery rate of 83 percent.

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said South Africa has passed the surge of COVID-19 infections, citing decreasing numbers of infections in areas like Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

The provinces have had some of the highest infection rates and have recently shown a decrease over the past few weeks.

The minister said corruption linked to COVID-19 PPE tenders are devastating.

The Special Investigating Unit is probing government contracts worth R5-billion that may have been awarded irregularly.
