Lockdown: Durban nurses given eviction notices

They might be at the frontline of the fight against coronavirus, but that doesn’t mean they are well treated.

Nurses at Wentworth Hospital in Durban claim the same government that prohibited evictions under the lockdown handed out eviction notices in June.

They say they have to move out of their digs to make way for next year’s intake of SA doctors, who trained in Cuba.

Trade union Nehawu says its members aren’t going anywhere. You are to vacate your premises by the 1st of October.

That’s the message from the KZN Health Department to Wentworth Hospital nurses. Several nurses have lived at the residence for 20 years.

With less than 20 days remaining, some of the nurses who live hundreds of kilometres away, now have to find accommodation without any assistance from the department. Nehawu says it’s dumbfounded by this decision.

“There was no consultation with the unions. Those eviction notices are going to be withdrawn. Those were the resolutions at the meeting that was dated on 24 July 2020. We even questioned the legality of these evictions”, said Nehawu Regional Secretary Prince Mthalane.
