THE SABC in the Free State is in mourning after losing one of its employees, Thabo Katsande.
The public broadcaster announced that its videographer and Lesedi FM presenter, who hosted a reggae show and current affairs programmes, has died.
In a statement released on social media, the SABC said he died from heart complications at a hospital in Pretoria on Friday, 11 March.
“The SABC News division in Bloemfontein is mourning the death of video journalist, Thabo Katsande. The 48-year-old died from heart complications at a hospital in Pretoria yesterday afternoon (Friday, 11 March),” they wrote.
“Among others, the award-winning Thabo also hosted the reggae show and current affairs programmes at Lesedi FM. He has been with the SABC News for almost seven years. Funeral arrangements are yet to be finalised,” the statement continued.
Tributes and messages of condolences from friends and colleagues have also been pouring on social media.
Mantsheuwa Mofokeng wrote: “Thabo Katsande, my friend. I am shattered. You believed so much in me. I’ll aways remember your warm compliments. Always lifting my spirit up when life showed me flames.
“You always understood your assignment as a video journalist. Your great and unmatched wisdom#.
“All I can say now is RIP: Return If Possible, my guy. I still have so much to learn from you. I’m struggling to breathe. Death be not proud. Sejana se setle, ha se jelle,” she wrote.
“You were not just a friend, Thibos. You were my mentor, a friend, my pastor, my inspiration, and a shoulder to cry on.
“I will always cherish the day I first met you in 2014 at QwaQwa Radio. RIP Thabo Katsande,” wrote another Facebook user, Malefetsane Moreki.
