Cape Town residents living in fear due to taxi violence

Residents of some areas in Cape Town are living in fear over the taxi violence plaguing the city.

The taxi industry is the lifeblood of the township economy.

But the recent murders and attacks on innocent people have tainted its image.

Some routes have now been closed, but taxi bosses are defiant.

The raging taxi war between rival associations Cata and Codeta has seen innocent bystanders becoming victims.

Taxi owners are angry, following the provincial government’s closure of certain routes.

They say they can’t suffer alone if their vehicles aren’t operating.

The Western Cape Government says 83 people have been murdered during taxi violence this year, with 24 killed in July alone.

From Monday, one of the most dangerous routes between Bellville and Paarl will be shut for two months, in an effort to stop the killings.
