Sunflower Breeder – Sensako
I. About the Position
With 60 years of research experience in the breeding and commercialization of agronomic crops, Sensako is a well-established and growing organization within the South African seed industry. Sensako is expanding its summer crop research component and is seeking a Breeder to be responsible for designing, developing and evaluating new sunflower hybrids with high commercial value in South African markets.
II. Responsibilities
Responsibilities may include but not limited to:
Main Objective
Coordinate trial design, layout and seed preparation.
Support breeders to collect phenotypic data across locations, improving the quality of data.
Project and people management across breeding teams.
Management of budget and Capex items.
Coordinate and assist in routine breeding program activities utilizing molecular, genetic and traditional methods.
Specific Functions:
Uphold the company’s brand image in a professional manner.
Utilising latest breeding technologies to develop superior inbred lines and hybrids.
Prepare seed shipments.
Collaboration with trial growers and selection of optimal off-site localities for yield trials.
Collection of agronomic data, update databases.
Coordinate and ensure the completion of all seed saving activities.
Molecular breeding associated activities including tissue selection and collaboration with the molecular program lead.
General problem solving, fault finding and resolving of mechanical and environmental problems to ensure successful data collection.
General administration functions.
III. Education & experience
BSc degree in Plant breeding, skills in statistical analysis will be a bonus.
Strong computer skills related to data management and Microsoft Office, including Excel.
Strong project management skills.

The position is based in Bethlehem, Free State.
The position will require regular travel and time away from home.
A valid driver’s license is required.
