Eskom will implement stage 2 blackouts from 5 pm on Thursday until 10 pm.
The power utility says a generating unit at Lethabo power station was taken offline for repairs on Wednesday.
It has warned that the onset of winter and increased demand will lead to capacity constraints.
South Africans are being urged to use electricity sparingly.
