COVID-19: US to end travel ban on southern Africa

The US will lift its travel ban on southern Africa this week.

Several countries imposed the bans last month after South African scientists identified the Omicron variant.

It had already been present in a number of other countries.

President Cyril Ramaphosa spoke out against the restrictions, saying South Africa was being punished for identifying the strain and for being transparent.

The United Nations was also critical of the travel bans.
