Sophie Lichaba talks about her new Lockdown role

Last week there were fake reports making the rounds on social media that Sophie Lichaba had died, this week the actress proves she’s very much alive and kicking, and her career is as healthy as ever. Sophie announced she’ll be joining the fifth season of popular Safta-winning prison drama Lockdown.

Sophie, who is best known for her long-running role as the feisty Queen Moroka on Generations, is said to have already started shooting scenes for Lockdown, which starting filming last week at Constitutional Hill in Johannesburg. Speaking to DRUM about her new role, the actress explains why she’s been missing from our TV screens and what we can expect from her character.

“People know me as Queen on Generations, so I’ve been focusing on my businesses because I wanted something different to the character that I used to play. I am very excited about my new role and I’m certain the viewers are going to love it,” the actress says.

Sophia adds that viewers are aware that a lot of women in drama series aren’t like those you’d bump into on the street but that “viewers can expect a woman who represents a lot of women out there who go through stuff in life”. Following last week’s nasty death hoax, Sohpia tells DRUM she’s very disappointed in whoever spread the news about her and that it has really affected her family, friends and her emotional and physical well being.

I believe that no one has the right to put my family through all of that. My son was at school that day and everybody knows that diabetes is a silent killer. He had to hear the news from people at school and since I have taught him about the disease he knows that anything can happen at any time.” Lockdown has moved from Mzansi Magic to streaming service Showmax, and the new season will stream from 31 January 2020.
