Somizi on AKA roast: Mine was better

Somizi on AKA roast: Mine was better. While some thought things got heated between AKA and his panellists; Somizi felt as if the entire affair was a little mild.

The Comedy Central #RoastOfAKA finally aired earlier this week (and can now be streamed on ShowMax) and has had the whole country talking this week. At least compared to his own Roast, which took place exactly a year ago.

The latest edition of the global Roast series took place at the Teatro in Montecasino, Johannesburg at the end of February but most of Mzansi got in on the action for the first time on the 11th of March when it aired on Comedy Central.

Nina Hastie,Mark Fish, Davido, Francois van Coke, Moshe Ndiki, Joey Rasdien, Moonchild Sanelly and Roastmaster, Pearl Thusi, all took aim AKA for over 90 minutes before he had the chance to hit back.

Kiernan Jarryd Forbes was grilled for everything from his extremely English-sounding name to his one-sided rivalry with Cassper Nyovest.

When the dust had settled and the laughter had died down, the critics came out for the Roast of AKA — one of whom, was Somizi. Although there were some low blows, Somizi doesn’t feel as if AKA’s roasters went low enough.

Speaking on Metro FM’s The Fresh Breakfast, he said:

“I realised what the problem was. The problem was with my Roast, the standard was so high. It was high because of the panel. I don’t know how they did it but they did it right.”

Somizi felt as if the balance between comedians and influencers was perfect during his edition of the comedy special, but it wasn’t just the personnel he praised from last year’s Roast of Somizi.

The Metro FM presenter suspected that AKA’s panellists had been restricted to certain topics. It was notable on the night that some of AKA’s biggest scandals of the last few years were barely touched on.

Somizi continued with his conspiracy:

“Yes they touched on some topics but they didn’t go there. If it was me and you [to DJ Fresh] there, the country would still be in mourning. He probably said you are not going to speak about Bonang. You’re not going to speak about Zinhle. You’re not going to speak about ABC. This left nothing to Roast. It was a toast.”

While many agreed with Somizi, it is worth noting that back in 2018 many viewers felt as if Somizi’s roasters had crossed one too many lines in encouraging homophobia and stigma against HIV positive South Africans.
