The Department of Chemistry and Polymer Science is a research-intensive department with more than 120 postgraduate research students. The Department has excellent research facilities and equipment, including 300, 400 and 600 MHz liquid NMR instruments and a 500 MHz solid-state NMR instrument, and is currently in the process of acquiring a new liquid-phase instrument. The Analytical division of the Department has well-established expertise in separation science, molecular (NMR) spectroscopy and modelling. We are seeking a dynamic person who can contribute to the spectroscopic research activities within the Department, as well as to the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate Analytical Chemistry modules.

Lecturer

Duties:

Undertaking and supervising research activities in applications of molecular spectroscopy as a postgraduate supervisor, potentially in collaboration with other research groups in the department;
Teaching Analytical Chemistry at undergraduate and postgraduate level;
Undertaking responsibilities and duties at departmental and faculty level as needed;
Taking academic responsibility for the Central Analytical Facilities (CAF) NMR unit.

Required Skills
A PhD degree in Chemistry
Post-doctoral or appropriate academic/industrial research experience
Proof of successful postgraduate student supervision
Candidate Requirements
Senior Lecturer

A PhD degree in Chemistry (with a research focus in Analytical Chemistry or any aspect of molecular spectroscopy);
Post-doctoral or appropriate academic/industrial research experience;
Evidence of a coherent body of published work as first or principal (corresponding) author in leading international journals;
Proven ability to secure research funding to establish a viable research group;
Proof of successful postgraduate student supervision;
Experience and evidence of excellence in teaching;
Verbal and written fluency in English.

Lecturer

A PhD degree in Chemistry (with a research focus in Analytical Chemistry, or any aspect of molecular spectroscopy);
Publications in leading international journals;
Demonstrated potential to develop an active research programme;
Demonstrated potential to develop an innovative teaching programme;
Verbal and written fluency in English.

Recommendation:

NRF rating;
A research focus in NMR;
Good verbal and written communication skills in Afrikaans;
Post-doctoral or appropriate academic/industrial research experience (Lecturer);
Proven ability to secure research funding (Lecturer).
