The Plant Breeding Laboratory is situated at Welgevallen experimental farm and forms part of the Department of Genetics, Faculty of AgriSciences.
The incumbent will function as a technical officer within the research environment. This is a nine-month fixed term contract appointment.
Duties:
Undergraduate practicals and tutorials:
Preparing practicals and tutorials;
Assisting with the presentation of practicals and tutorials.
Research laboratory:
Ordering research materials;
Facilitating the maintenance of equipment;
Limited supervision of postgraduate students and interns with relation to laboratory activities;
Upkeeping of documentation for project management purposes.
Assistance with research projects:
DNA extractions;
PCR reactions;
Preparing breeding material for field testing.
Required Skills
BScAgric degree, or BScHons in Genetics or Plant breeding
Effective organising ability, as well as administrative and presentation skills
Ability to work independently as well as in a group
Candidate Requirements
BScAgric degree, or BScHons in Genetics or Plant breeding;
Experience with the execution of the technical aspects of a modern, conventional plant breeding programme;
Effective organising ability, as well as administrative and presentation skills;
Ability to work independently as well as in a group;
Knowledge of the small grain industry in the Western Cape;
Valid Code B driver’s licence.
Recommendation:
Relevant postgraduate qualification;
Proficiency in the SU central computer ordering software;
Previous experience in plant breeding laboratory with triticale and/or wheat.
